The Low Down On Liquid Highlighters

There is such a huge variety of liquid highlighters and i know sometimes it can be a struggle to find one to suit darker, tanned, asian skin tones.

I wanted to share with you what my top picks are and some are from my personal collection and others are from my kit.

Lets start with the first thing, what are liquid highlighters anyway? Think of normal highlighters but in a liquid form, which can be used in several ways. Liquid highlighters tend to be much more sheerer than powder highlighters and have more of a lotion feel to it.

How do you use these:
  • Mix it in with your moisturizer/foundation/tinted moisturizer.
  • Use it on alone on a bare face.
  • Apply it to the high points of your face - tops of your cheeks, ridge of the nose, cupids bow.
  • Use it as a wash of colour on your lids.
  • Apply a little to the centre of your lip over lipstick - it will catch the light and make your lips look fuller.
  • Use it on your shoulders or decollete to catch the light. This looks fabulous when you're on holiday.

Left-Right: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Opal, MAC Strobe Lotion, NARS Illuminator Orgasm & Super Orgasm

Becca Shimmering Skin PerfectorBLOG POST HERE

This is very similar to MAC Strobe Cream, however i find it slightly thicker in consistency. It has light diffusing particles, which gives the skin that instant radiance. This is a multi-tasking product, so its a combination of skin care and makeup. I like using this to highlight the face, because of how it instantly catches the light.

MAC Strobe Cream/LotionBLOG POST HERE

MAC Strobe lotion is a very sheer illuminating product and probably the sheerest out of my collection. It naturally illuminates the skin and isn't so obvious that you are wearing an illuminating product. This is classified as more of a skin care product because of the properties. I find this works better when used under makeup or mixed in with a foundation because of how dewy it makes the skin appear.

NARS Orgasm Illuminator - BLOG POST HERE

Orgasm illuminator replicates the natural holiday glow that we all have when we go away. You can use this product in the ways i have mentioned above. Orgasm is a pinky, peach with a hint of gold and would compliment all skin tones. I would suggest using this before powder, as there could be come lifting.

MAC Lustre Drops Sun Rush & Pink Rebel, Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush Icing, Benefit High Beam & Sun Beam

MAC Lustre Drops Sun Rush/Pink Rebel

The MAC Lustre Drops are a bit sheerer than the Benefit highlighters. It is a very buildable product and doesn't disturb the makeup underneath. The Lustre Drops can be mixed in with a lot of products, if you are looking for a more natural glow.

Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush Icing - BLOG POST HERE

When i first came across these, they were a bit tricky to get the hang of because the consistency was quite watery. I would normally use this after foundation but before powder, as it does almost 'set', similar to the Benefit products. It is very long wearing and won't rub off, so it's great for people who have oily skin.

Benefit Sun Beam/High Beam - BLOG POST HERE

I have always loved using the Benefit Sun Beam because of how the golden tones enhances my skin tone. I like dabbing this on my cheek bones, as it gives the skin a healthy golden glow. I have noticed that the Benefit products do kinda 'set', so i would use this on top of makeup. I haven't noticed any lifting when applying this over powder. High Beam appears as a very icy, silver shade, but it is much more noticeable when you are wearing it. I love using this on my bridal clients.

Left-Right: Tom Ford Skin Illuminator Fire Lust, Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer #11 & #5

Tom Ford Skin Illuminator Fire Lust

This is the most expensive one of the lot, but i just had to include it! It is a pinky, peach with gold shimmer (quite similar to NARS Orgasm). This is very sheer but buildable, depending on the intensity you want. It gives a subtle glow to tanned skin tones and again can be used under, over and mixed in with makeup.

Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer #5/#11

These are the newest additions to my collection. The Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheers are radiance boosting products, which help define and illuminate the skin. No. 5 is a shimmery coral and for fairer skins, it will work as a blush but for my skin tone, i use it as an illuminator. No. 11 is very similar to NARS Orgasm and Tom Ford Fire Lust, however the formula is much more fluid and it is a tad bit sheerer.

I hope this post has helped anyone looking into liquid highlighters. I am a huge fan of them because of how versatile they are and also how the product can change the appearance of the skin. It is almost a trend to have radiant, glowing skin and these products will certainly achieve that.

What's your favourite liquid highlighter?

NYX Round Lipstick Review & Swatches

Over the last few months i have accumulated some NYX Round Lipsticks and wanted to share my swatches with you guys!

NYX Round Lipsticks are super affordable and highly pigmented. I find these lipsticks are very creamy and don't dry out my lips.

The packaging is very simple, however my only gripe is that they don't have the lipstick shades on the bottom, they have it on the lid. I had to be very careful not to mix anything up when i was taking pictures!

Left-Right: Fire, Miracle, Fig, Doll

Left-Right: Fire, Miracle, Fig, Doll

Fire - Bright pink red.
Miracle - Coral red.
Fig - Soft pink
Doll - Deep pink.

Left-Right: Louisiana, Haute Melon, Chic, Rose

Left-Right: Louisiana, Haute Melon, Chic, Rose

Louisiana - Blue based pink.
Haute Melon -  Red toned coral.
*Chic - Pale pink.
*Rose - Soft, rosy pink.

NYX offer many different shades and at £4 a pop, you can't resist picking up a few more! These lipsticks are moisturising and very creamy. As you can see, they don't have a complete matte finish to them, but more of a sheen finish.

I do find that the lasting power isn't the greatest, especially when you are eating or drinking. I think the maximum wear time is about 2.5-3 hours. I also find it frustrating that you can only purchase these online, and you have to rely on swatches online in order to get an understanding of the shades.

Overall, i do like them and they are a lot cheaper than some of the drugstore lipsticks that you can pick up in Boots or Superdrug. Due to the lipsticks being so creamy, it is very easy to mix them in order to get a custom shade.

NYX Round Lipsticks are £4 and can be purchased online HERE.

What other NYX lipstick shades would you recommend?

Project 10 Pan

I have a ridiculous amount of makeup and i am the first one to admit it! I have decided to do a project 10 pan, where i have to use up all the products.....or try to! I have given myself 30 days.......ok, maybe a bit more than 30 days, and incorporated these products into my makeup bag.

Why am i doing this you ask?! I find myself discovering new products all the time, so my older products tend to get forgotten about! I love that feeling of knowing i have used up a product......like i have accomplished something! Ha ha weird i know!

I have physically put these items into my everyday makeup bag, so i have no choice but to use them. On a daily basis, i wear very minimal makeup, however i am trying to incorporate some eyeshadows into the mix! I just find in the morning, i have about 10-15 minutes to get ready and eyeshadow takes the longest to put on!

What's in my project 10 pan? Ok, you're gonna see from the list that it's not quite 10 products, but i wanted some variety in my makeup bag!

Face

  • Laura Mercier Primer
  • Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation
  • Wild About Beauty Sheer Glow Moisture Tint
  • MAC Studio Finish Concealer
  • MAC Mineralize Skin Finish

Cheeks

  • Bobbi Brown Blush (Apricot)
  • NARS Trio (Orgasm Blush, Laguna Bronzer, Albatross Highlighter)

Eyes

  • MAC Eyeshadow Palette
  • MAC Smolder
  • Benefit They're Real Mascara

Lips

  • NARS Lipstick (Dolce Vita)
  • NARS Lipgloss (Easy Lover)
  • Revlon Lip Butter (Pink Truffle, Candy Apple)
  • Clinique Chubby Stick (Chunky Cherry)

Why have i chosen these products? A couple of them are my daily essentials, however i am wanting to finish them, so i can start using other products. Plus, i hate the fact that i just have make up sitting around and not being used!

I have only chosen make up items, as i find these are the hardest to finish, unlike toiletries and skincare. I would love for you guys to let me know if you are doing a project 5, 10, 20 pan! It would be great to know it's not just me doing it and if you are, please send me your links!

Have you done a project 10 pan? How did it go?

NARS Fairy's Kiss Palette Review

I noticed this palette whilst shopping on the NARS website and fell in love with the shades. I have the previous NARS And God Created The Woman Palette (review HERE) and was obsessed with using that.

This palette is part of the NARS Fall 2013 Gift Collection and there has also been another palette called Ride Up To The Moon released alongside with it.......i managed to add that to my cart too!

I like and dislike this palette, let me explain..........

There is a great balance of lavenders, purples and neutrals and is a palette that is ideal for using day and night. The shades are all from the existing range and from what i can tell, existing duos.

There are four beautiful colours which i loved using; Kalahari, Brousse, Brumes and Pandora. Why are these my favourite out of the palette? I found these eyeshadows easy to apply to the eyelids with very minimal fall out and they blended beautifully. The eyeshadows were pigmented and there was that chance of building up the colour for a more bolder look.

Left-Right: Monosque, Kalahari, Brousse, Tokyo, Brumes, Pandora.

I have Pandora in another palette and for some reason the Pandora in this palette didn't show up as a true black, but almost as a grey/black. I only used Pandora to use on my outer V and my lower lash line and it was fine.......maybe I'm being picky?! However, i really liked using Brumes in my crease and it also helped blend out any harsh lines.

The two shades that i was kinda disappointed in was Monosque and Tokyo. I found these two shades quite chalky and powdery, and found they barely showed up on my NC42 skin. You can see from the swatch, the shades do show up but on my arm only! I tried using them wet to see if it would become more pigmented, but it didn't! I ended up trying to use them on the inner corner of my eye, as it's a light shade but again, the colour didn't translate onto my lids like it is in the palette.

You can see the difference between the older palette, and the new existing palette, as well as a blusher.

Top: Older Palette. Middle: NEW Fairy's Kiss Palette. Right: Blush Palette

I think the size of the palette may annoy some people because the eyeshadows seem a bit smaller compared to the ones you got in the previous limited edition palette and they were only about £7 more.

My final thoughts? I honestly do like this palette, but found Monosque and Tokyo the most disappointing shades out of the entire lot. It's kinda frustrating, as i wont get much use out of those colours, however, these shades are more suited to paler skin tones. In my honest opinion, i think this palette isn't great for people who have deeper skin tones than myself, because the colours just aren't pigmented enough. Its great if you want a subtle natural look, but if you wanted to use this for a super smokey eye makeup, i don't think the shades will be bold enough.

I am eager to see how the Ride Up To The Moon palette is compared with this one.

The palette is limited edition, retails at £32 and can be purchased HERE.

What do you think of NARS eyeshadows?

Henna For Eid/Special Occasions

A few days before Eid or any special occasion, henna is one of the first things to come out! I have been making my own henna paste for years and about 8 years ago i studied a henna course, as i wanted to learn everything i could about it!

Every time i have been to Bangladesh, we have always used fresh henna taken straight from the tree. The stain is unbelievable and it is impressive that you don't need to add any other ingredients except water. They would always use tooth picks to do the henna design or roll up old newspaper into cones.

I am not a henna snob by any means, however over the last nine years i have tried and tested many henna recipes and have found one that works very well, leaving the most beautiful coffee coloured stains on the palms. I am always wary of using pre-made henna cones, as there are no ingredients and you just don't know whether you will have a reaction or not. When i have worked on clients in previous years, i have always used my home made henna paste because that way i know what's in the paste!

Henna takes a lot of practise, but i guess that's with anything right? When i first started out i was trying to henna anyone and everyone but also drawing patterns on paper. I love doing it on special occasions when i have the time, because sometimes an intricate design can take between 1-3 hours! For occasions like Eid, i like doing strip patterns up the palm.

I always do henna at least 48 hours before the event/occasion. Why you ask? Henna takes at least 24 hours to develop on the skin. Some people have complained that as soon as they have removed the henna paste, they have been left with a faint orange stain. However, after 12-24 hours the henna will slowly deepen, this does depend on your body chemistry as well! Henna/mehndi can be applied almost anywhere, however it always stains better on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet because the skin is much more thicker.

I apply a lemon and sugar seal once the henna has started to dry. This helps keep the henna moist and the more sticky the henna paste, the longer it will stick to the skin, which means the stain will be darker.

Once the henna has dried fully, i wrap tissue around my hand (kinda like a mummy!), and then wrap it with cling film. I wrap it with cling film for many reasons; it keeps the henna paste contained, so you won't be staining your bed sheets and the cling film helps the hand heat up which allows the henna stain to penetrate deeper into the skin.

I always do henna in the evening and recommend leaving it overnight. The longer the henna is on the skin, the better the stain will be.

Top: Immediately after removing paste. Middle: 12 hours after removal. Bottom: 24 hours after removal.

How to prolong your henna stain:

  • When washing up, use gloves!
  • Don't swim in chlorinated pools, as the chlorine will fade the henna quicker.
  • Moisturise - the more hydrated your skin is, the longer your stain will last.
  • When taking off the henna paste, don't wash your hands straight away. Try to rub your hands together and most of the dried henna paste will rub off. Avoid washing your hands for at least a couple of hours after removing the henna.
  • Once the henna paste has been removed and your hands are clean, apply an oil like mustard oil, it stinks but helps deepen the stain as it raises the temperature of your palms.
  • A developing henna stain likes heat! You may notice if you have had a hot bath or shower, your henna may deepen slightly.

I love using henna for special occasions, as it's such a strong part of my upbringing and culture. I try to attempt different designs, whether it's indian or arab and for me, it's just so much fun! I always find it exciting to see how the henna stain will look!

Do you like using henna for special occasions?

MAC Makeup Removing Wipes Review

You guys are probably thinking why on earth is she doing a review on makeup wipes?! I have tried my fair share of makeup wipes, some good and some bad, so i thought i would give the MAC wipes a go.

I have searched high and low for good makeup wipes and i don't just want wipes that take off face makeup but i needed wipes that can remove stubborn eye makeup too. Many makeup artists had recommended these wipes to me and i decided to pick up a pack and see if it was really living up to what they were saying.

I like how MAC offer three different size packs, as normally there are about 25 face wipes in a pack? You can get packs of 30, 45 and 100. I decided to pick up the 100 bulk pack, as it was more economical, even though it is £19.50!

I know what you guys are thinking......£19.50 per pack, you crazy?!! Hmmm maybe?! Let me explain.....

These makeup wipes take off everything and i mean everything. You also only need one wipe, whereas with other brands, i have used maybe 2/3 face wipes just to remove all my face and eye makeup. It removes even waterproof mascara and doesn't leave a greasy film on my skin, unlike other wipes.

The one thing that i loathe is when face wipes start to dry out. I hate that little sticky tab that you get, which ends up coming off after a couple of days! The MAC wipes has a secure clip tab and a foil lining underneath, so it prevents any moisture loss and keeps the wipes nice and hydrated.

I normally only use makeup wipes on my really lazy days before bed or when i am at the gym, and i have found that it removes all makeup in one easy go and doesn't break me out.

I know this is a huge chunk of change to fork out on makeup wipes, however i do find that these work for me and i am more than happy to use these on my clients when on a shoot etc.

MAC Makeup wipes start from £10 and can be purchased HERE.

What are your favourite wipes?

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Antwerp Review

I have not really been fond of super matte lips, especially as i suffer from mega dry lips! However, a few weeks back i was placing an order with NYX Cosmetics and came across the Soft Matte Lip Cream. My sister is obsessed with using something very similar and raves about it a lot, so i added it to my basket.

When it arrived it look almost identical to the Collection Cream Puff (that's the one my sister uses). I am always wary of using matte products on my lips, as i do find some of them really dry out my lips and who wants to keep reapplying lip balm all day?!

I decided to pick up Antwerp, as it looked like a pretty colour for my skin tone. Antwerp is a pinky, coral shade and very pigmented. It has a vanilla scent to it, which didn't bother me as it was subtle. I'm not keen on the scents that MAC lipsticks have!

I think this shade will look different on different skin tones, because on me, it looks like a soft coral but i think on a fairer person, it will show up much more vibrant.

It comes with a doe foot applicator, so it's easy to get the product out but also apply it precisely to the lips. When applied, it has a slight sheen to it but after a bit of time, it appears more matte and opaque on the lips without that dry look! This will go patchy if you apply too much product, as it is quite opaque.

Once it dries, it doesn't budge! Even having a drink, there is no mark left on the cup! This stays put for about 4-5 hours on my lips, but i think if you are eating or drinking, chances are some of the product will come off slightly. I do find that it does fade unevenly, so you do have to be careful if you are having a heavy meal!

Overall, i do think this is great value for money, however i believe the Collection Cream Puffs retail for £2.99, which is slightly cheaper than the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. The other thing that i have mentioned before is that you can only purchase it online, so sometimes it is very difficult to get an idea of the shades.

I prefer this product more for the summer months, purely because my lips don't get as dry and i think this shade fits in perfectly for this time of year.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams retail for £5.50 and can be purchased HERE.

Have you tried these before?

Book Review | Jemma Kidd Make-up Secrets

Since i was at makeup school, or even before that i enjoyed reading makeup books from various artists. One of my favourite things about makeup books is gazing over the beautiful photographs. There is so much information out there but as a makeup artist, i still love learning about new techniques, products, applications etc.

The Jemma Kidd Make-up Secrets book is filled with useful information, tips and tricks that will inspire anyone. I don't have her previous book, Jemma Kidd Make-up Masterclass but i had heard many good things about it.

The book is divided into two parts: Making Makeup Work For You and Problem Solver. The first part is broken down into Naturally Beautiful, Enchanting Eyes, Luscious Lips, Fashion Makeup and Timeless Looks.

The second part explains how to deal with problems; Maintaining Radiant Skin, Beauty First Aid, Holding Back The Years, Seasonal Shift and Stop The Clock.

There are other sections which talk about skin concerns, such as dry patches, disguising dark circles and eye bags, treating dry, chapped lips and so much more! The book also includes 5 minute makeup looks for different occasions and we have all been in that situation where you have a few minutes to get ready!

One of the reasons why i love this book, is that it caters for everyone, whether you're a beginner into makeup or a makeup artist or just love beauty. I find this book giving me a lot of inspiration, as sometimes we get into a rut with our makeup routine. This book has so many beautiful images and illustrations, which will help you recreate looks at home.

I wanted to try and keep this review quite brief, as i could have baffled on for ages!!!

Jemma Kidd Make-up Secrets can be purchased on Amazon for £16.
